The Life of James Smart,
Elizabeth Lezier and Anne Major
James Smart was born in 1775 and was
baptised on 5th November 1775 at St Mary Magdalene C of E Church
in Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire.
His parents were
Alexander Smart and Ann Lord.
On 23rd June 1800 he married
Elizabeth Lezier* (born 1781) at St Mary Magdalene C of E Church in Husborne Crawley.
Together they had 8 children:

Thomas
Smart- baptised at St John the
Baptist, Eversholt, Bedfordshire, on11th September 1808.
Ann Smart-
baptised at St John the Baptist, Eversholt on 28th April 1811.
Mary Smart-
baptised at St John the Baptist, Eversholt on 27th June 1813.
George Smart- born in
Eversholt in 1815.
Lucy Smart-
baptised at St John the Baptist, Eversholt on 15th February 1818.
Sarah Smart-
baptised at St John the Baptist, Eversholt on 25th June1820.
Elizabeth Smart-
baptised at St John the Baptist, Eversholt on 1st February 1824.
James’ wife, Elizabeth died and was buried
at St John the Baptist, Eversholt on 23rd January 1837 aged 56.
On the 14th August 1840, James
married again. His second was wife was Ann Major
(born 1795). They were wed
at St John the Baptist church, Eversholt.
In the 1841 Census, James
and Anne were living at Hills End in Eversholt, James is listed as being 65
years old and his occupation is and agricultural labourer. Anne’s age is
recorded as 45 years old, no occupation is listed.
In the 1851 Census, James and Anne were
living at 78 Waters End in Eversholt, James is listed as being 75 years old
and his occupation is given as a “pauper for labour”. Anne is shown as being
51, again with no occupation listed.
James died as was buried at St John the
Baptist, Eversholt on 6th August 1851, aged 71.
In the 1861 Census, Anne was listed as a
widow living at 37 Waters End in Eversholt, Her age is recorded as being 65
years and her occupation as a lacemaker.
In the 1871 Census,
Anne was listed as a widow living at 34 Waters End in Eversholt, Her age is
recorded as being 70 years and she is recorded as a pauper.
Anne died and was buried at St John the
Baptist, Eversholt on 1st May 1871, aged 71.
