The
Life of George Smart, Mary Saunders and Mary-Ann How (nee Bowshire)
George Smart was born
in Eversholt in 1815; there is no evidence of him being baptised.
His parents were
James
Smart and Elizabeth Lezier.
On 30th
November 1834 he married Mary Saunders at St John the Baptist Church in Eversholt.
Together they had
one child:
Elizabeth Smart.
She was baptised at St John the Baptist Church on 7th June 1835.
Mary died and was
buried at St John the Baptist Church on. 15th January 1837, aged 24.
George remarried on 7th
August 1837. He married a widow, Mary Ann Bosher (baptised 1st
September 1816 at Buckley, Berkshire), who had previously married James How
on 4th November 1835 and given birth to James How in Eversholt.
He was baptised on 26th February 1837. James How (snr) died aged
23 and was buried on 28th November 1836. .
Together George
and Mary Ann had 5 more children:

born 21st April and baptised on 13th May 1838 at St
John the Baptist Church
Mary Smart born
5th September 1839 and baptised on19th January 1840 at
St John the Baptist Church
Jane Smart born
in 1841 and baptised on 2nd November 1845 at St John the Baptist Church
Ann Smart was
baptised on 2nd November 1845 at St John the Baptist Church
William Smart
born in 1843 and baptised on 2nd November 1845 at St John the Baptist Church
George Smart
(junior) baptised on 14th March 1858 at Milton Bryant
In the 1841 Census
George and Mary Ann were living at Hills End in Eversholt. George is
detailed as being an Agricultural Labourer and Mary Ann as a Lacemaker. Both
ages are given as 25 years. Also in the house were Elizabeth (6) and James
(5) from both of their previous marriages as well as Joseph (3),
Mary (2), Jane (2 months) also in the house was Anne Bosher, Mary Ann's
sister
In the 1851 Census,
the family were living at 57 Hills End in Eversholt. George and Mary Ann appear with the family, including Elizabeth and James
from the previous marriages. George is still an Agricultural Labourer but no
occupation is listed for Mary Ann. Elizabeth (16), James (15) Joseph (12) ,
Mary (10), Jane (8) and Ann (7) are living with their parents.
The 1861 Census shows
that they had moved to 66 Cottage at Milton Bryant. .George is a Post
Messenger aged 45 and Mary a Straw Plaiter aged 46. Mary (21), Jane (19) and
Ann (17) are still living with their parents.
The 1871 Census shows
that they had moved to 53 The Rectory at Milton Bryant. George is an
annaniut late postman aged 55, Mary a Laundress aged 54. They have a new
son, George listed as being 13 years old.
The 1881 Census shows
that they had moved to Eversholt Road in Milton Bryant. George is listed as a Pensioner
from the Post Office, aged 66 and Mary, Formerly Laundress, aged 67.
The 1891 Census shows
that they had moved to 8 Rectory Cottage, Milton Bryant. George is now a
widow aged 75 and listed as a retired Postman. In the house at the time was
his daughter Ann (Knock), Laundress, aged 45 and a widow. Her daughter
Henrietta aged 18 and a dressmaker. Also in the house was William Smart,
one of George’s grandsons, aged 10 and a scholar.
To date I have found no record of George's death or
burial.
